Never Stop Trying

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.  Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.         Galatians 6:9-10

Every now and then I decide to watch what I eat, to turn over a new leaf, to be healthy. During this time I feel so much better.  I start losing weight, I feel lighter and more fit.  I think “I’ve got this!”  Then I’ll have a bad day, and on the way home I’ll grab a cheeseburger.  There’s nothing wrong with having a cheeseburger every now and then, but sometimes when I’ve fallen off of the food wagon, I’ve thought, “well I’ve blown it anyway, I may as well have the french fries too, and I think while I’m at it I’ll have a chocolate milk shake.”  Then it seems like an ‘I’ve blown it” mentality stays with me.  I don’t want salad anymore, I want pie and potato chips.

It’s hard to do the right thing all of the time.  We get tired; we get discouraged.  We wonder if anyone notices when we do anything right; it seems like all they notice is our mistakes. So, why bother?  How many times have I not done what is good out of sheer tiredness or even laziness? How many times have I passed by a homeless person and avoided eye contact?  How many times have I seen someone who needed prayer but didn’t stop to pray for them?  How many times have I seen someone alone and didn’t talk to them?

Our God is a loving God.  He is all about goodness and mercy.  As we follow in His ways, we also must strive to be filled with goodness and mercy, and we must pass it on to others.  Galatians 6:13 says, Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.”

God wants us to love Him and His creation the way He loves us.  He wants us to never give up on doing what is good – because He is good.  We aren’t perfect, we all blow it.  But we should never give up on striving to do what is right and loving.  And the more we commit to doing things God’s way, the more blessings we will reap – here on earth and in heaven.
